Proverbs 28 (New International Version)
1 The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.
2 When a country is rebellious, it has many rulers, but a man of understanding and knowledge maintains order.
3 A ruler who oppresses the poor is like a driving rain that leaves no crops.
4 Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law resist them.
5 Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand it fully.
6 Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a rich man whose ways are perverse.
7 He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father.
8 He who increases his wealth by exorbitant interest amasses it for another, who will be kind to the poor.
9 If anyone turns a deaf ear to the law, even his prayers are detestable.
10 He who leads the upright along an evil path will fall into his own trap, but the blameless will receive a good inheritance.
11 A rich man may be wise in his own eyes, but a poor man who has discernment sees through him.
12 When the righteous triumph, there is great elation; but when the wicked rise to power, men go into hiding.
13 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
14 Blessed is the man who always fears the LORD, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble.

I am sure these two verses go together. Nothing hardens the heart like concealed sins. The trouble will come because living a lie is like building on sand that will wash away. That's why the idea of giving God unhindered access to our hearts is so important. The fallen human heart is deceitful. We cannot understand or control our own hearts without the help of the Holy Spirit.

Jeremiah 17:9 (New International Version)
9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

If we detect bitterness, unforgiveness, jealousy, insecurity, victim mentality, or any other serious heart issue we must act. Get Godly counsel. Be determined to dig up the bitter roots!

Hebrews 12:14-16 (New King James Version)
14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.

15 Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked man ruling over a helpless people.
16 A tyrannical ruler lacks judgment, but he who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long life.
17 A man tormented by the guilt of murder will be a fugitive till death; let no one support him.
18 He whose walk is blameless is kept safe, but he whose ways are perverse will suddenly fall.
19 He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty.
20 A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
21 To show partiality is not good—yet a man will do wrong for a piece of bread.
22 A stingy man is eager to get rich and is unaware that poverty awaits him.
23 He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue.
24 He who robs his father or mother and says, "It's not wrong"—he is partner to him who destroys.
25 A greedy man stirs up dissension, but he who trusts in the LORD will prosper.
26 He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.
27 He who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.
28 When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding; but when the wicked perish, the righteous thrive.

AMEN to you comments, Pastor Dave.
To receive help from our habits and hangups one must first be willing to admit that they have a problem. Not being honest is a sure sign of heart sickness. We are only as sick as the secrets we keep. We have to continually ask God to change our hearts. For truly out of the heart come the issue's of life.

I have claimed the words of Jesus, ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. It is when you face the truth about yourself, what you are doing is sin, etc. only then will you be set free. The blame game that has been going on since Adam and Eve doesn't work. Suppression is not freedom, confessing and forsaking brings freedom. You can suppress, or control them where the world does not see them, and have everybody fooled, that doesn't make you free. God see's, He misses nothing. When you face the truth, you are on the road to freedom. Praise God!

Debbie, I agree. There is no worse feeling in life than having unconfessed sin. It can make you literally sick. I know there have been times when I know that I have done something wrong, yet, don't want to admit it. (Imagine that!) Oh, it makes me feel physically ill. After I have confessed and repented, it is an instant cure. God can heal our heart issue, if we confess it and allow him to be in control. I pray that I would give God access to see each and every part of my heart. I pray that he would help me to see my heart issues and to turn them over to him!!

1 The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.

At first when I read this verse, I questioned: why does a wicked man flee when no one is pursuing? The answer must be a bad conscience. John Piper says, “Our conscience creates the pursuer that ought to be there even though he is not there.”

This occurs in the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve sin. Genesis 3:8 says, “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.” God had always walked through the garden. He wasn’t chasing them. He was just taking a walk, but their bad conscience formulated a pursuit that wasn’t even happening!

I do this too! If I am speeding and hear a siren - that may be an ambulance - I want to flee (even though I am not being pursued). My conscience condemns me and I formulate pursuers out of nothing!

The wicked want to cover up their sin, so they will run from everything! The righteous, on the other hand, will stand firm with God as their strength. They may sin, but they will confess this instead of cover it up.

Martin Luther displayed lion-hearted strength. When asked to recant his teachings and writings in front of an assembly, he replied, “Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason—I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other—my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. [Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise.] God help me.”

I want to display this boldness. I want my conscience to be captive to God’s Word so that I can please Him in all of my decisions.
